Éigse Michael Hartnett 2011

11.00 am

Michael Hartnett Memorial Lecture:
Walking With Ireland through the Dark Wood.

In this memorial lecture, David Whyte, poet and compelling speaker, will look through the eyes of poetry at the close- in courageous conversations human beings have always faced at momentous times in their history. The financial crisis has decisively pulled the rug out from under a certain notion of Irish identity. In many ways the eyes of the world are on Ireland at this time; looking to see how it negotiates the threshold between its mythic past, its disappointed present, and its hoped-for future; particularly how it reconciles recrimination and re-imagination. These are robustly vulnerable conversations: close to the ground, intimate with grief and loss but always in dialogue with something longed for beyond the horizon of the present.
